Your Personal Brand of Greatness

Your Personal Brand of Greatness

Why do we hold all of the things, and beings, and aspects of the world to such narrow, pointed standards? To be successful looks like this, to be fit looks like that. Those people are living happy lives, while these people are sad and discontent lives. Duality is everywhere, so it seems the second we denote anything as “good,” all which opposes that, even on the most minute level, is forever burdened with the badge of “bad.” Why should one person’s version of happiness or success determine whether everyone else’s is more or less than? Life isn’t a one-size-fits-all situation. In fact, life looks different on every being who lives it!

I’m no Longer Stepping back from Resistance

I’m no Longer Stepping back from Resistance

I would roll my eyes as the words “revolved,” or “twisted,” whirled around the room. I felt embarrassed. There I was, the instructor taking class, and I was scoffing every time I exhaled to prayer twist. The postures didn’t bring me pain of the body, but they were definite cause for a bruised ego. I pretended my resistance was born of an intuitive call to protect my body from over-exerting my back, but in reality, I was protecting my pride, all the while doing less than what I could to allow my practice to heal my discomfort.

Releasing Yourself of Outcome

Releasing Yourself of Outcome

Non-attachment has caught my attention this week. As I reread through the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, I find myself pondering his thoughts on desire and the ways in which our ego’s wants and needs can hinder the growth that is meant to happen on our mats. We are continuously conjuring up an ongoing narrative in our heads about what we have, what we don’t, and what we should. Whether these notions are based around physical possessions, relationships, achievements in our career or in our practice, or all of the above, they are attachments which inevitably hold us back from discovering the beauty that lies in the space beyond.

Regulating Life’s Rollercoaster

Regulating Life’s Rollercoaster

Awhile back, I was in a yoga class when the instructor advised us to take all of our mental baggage and set it beside our mats. I loved this visual. It insinuated that I didn’t have to ignore the things I was thinking or feeling, but I also didn’t have to sit in them helplessly. I could acknowledge them, set them aside, and focus my energy on the task at hand.
