In choosing to live a life of non-attachment with the intention of reaching ultimate contentment, I recognize any sense of identity as attachment. The most monumental step I’ve taken in cultivating self-worth is becoming aware that my being is worthy without any sort of identity attached to it: take away my labels of teacher, artist, writer, dancer, friend, sister, daughter, even take away my name, and my being still exists, bright and beautiful and worthy. So, I ask myself, in order to describe what it means to be a woman, do I have to attach certain words, concepts, or attributes to the term? And by doing so, do I stunt my ability to ever experience genuine empowerment and contentment as that woman?
