How can we change the way we interact as men to take on more emotional labor outside of relationships? The easy answer is to say that we will start to talk about serious emotional subjects with our buddies. However, this is easier said than done. Years of conditioning have taught us to do the exact opposite and trying to force change is most often met with resistance. The best lives are lived with compassion and understanding. It actually requires more bravery from a man to lead his life from a place of empathy, understanding and compassion instead of from a place of strength and stoicism. It is easy to shut people out. The real challenge lies in letting people in.
Yogis hear it time and time again, “sit with whatever is coming up for you, be in your stillness, watch your thoughts and then release them.” A lot of fancy words that sometimes resonate, catalyzing ease of body and quiet of mind, but other times feel ignorant and mocking of our racing thoughts that just won’t shut off. Whether you’ve grasped the practice of sitting with your emotions or not, I encourage you to read this article by Dena Benavidez! She describes the tug-of-war our inner darkness and light play on us, and how to walk ourselves through the root behind reactionary thoughts and emotions in a fool-proof way. Her perspective served as a touching reminder for my own practice of mindfulness, and for that, I am excited to share it with you!
Love is magic. It is our divine gift and super power. Yet, we so quickly allow the associated risk of pain, our comfortability, or the unknown to hold us back from stepping into its mystical and transformative power. Love is as simple as breath, really, and if someone would have said that to me a year ago, I would have laughed in their face and deemed them a fool. What is more foolish, though, than ignoring the purest and most infinite aspect of our being?
