Awhile back, I was in a yoga class when the instructor advised us to take all of our mental baggage and set it beside our mats. I loved this visual. It insinuated that I didn’t have to ignore the things I was thinking or feeling, but I also didn’t have to sit in them helplessly. I could acknowledge them, set them aside, and focus my energy on the task at hand.

Once awareness is occupied by the physical sensations occurring throughout the body, it becomes easier to recognize our truest state of being: that we are, by nature, a spirit having a physical experience, and not the other way around. There’s a keen sense of being larger than we typically think we are, when our mind quiets and current reality sits at the forefront of our experience.

I’ve had many students walk through the door, lately, expressing that it’s been awhile since they’ve last practiced, and rounding out their thought with a sense of nervousness, hesitation, or even shame for allowing so much time to pass. Each conversation has arrived at a similar consensus about the difficulty of showing up on your mat after a yoga hiatus. I, too, have experienced the mental, physical, and emotional challenges that arise when life gets busy and yoga becomes scarce, and I, too, have suffered through the mind games that can occur when you finally return. I thought it would be helpful to put some of these feelings and thoughts out on the table because if I’ve learned anything throughout my journey with mindfulness and internal knowing, it’s that no one is alone in their experience, and the more vulnerable we are with each other, the better we can understand, guide, and motivate each other on our paths.

What is freedom? On most days I’d probably say freedom means something different to everybody, but when applied to the concepts and beliefs of spiritualism, yogic philosophy, Buddhism, or whatever higher form of thinking and being you’ve appointed as your guide to life, the notion of freedom contributes, collectively, to a single definition alone: the allowance and empowerment to be completely in touch with, and expressive of, our most authentic Self in order to create independence from the aspects of ego and life that bar us otherwise.

I started to realize just how much strength and courage it takes to push through the mess of achieving that which doesn’t come easily. For the most part, my main focuses in life have been dance, school, yoga, and teaching—all things I happen to have a knack for naturally. I’m beginning to see that I’ve rarely put myself in the position to be “bad” at something, and although it feels great to be good at the things I put my effort into, the real challenge lies in dedicating myself to being terrible at something in order to promote growth on a technical and soulful level.
