My Journey into Yoga

My Journey into Yoga

For nearly 20 years I have explored a fickle relationship with yoga chalk full of frustration by the inability to contort my long — generally inflexible and far from graceful — body into pretzel-like shapes or touch my toes. It wasn’t until completing the Chicago Marathon five years ago that I decided to give my joints a rest and offer yoga a more prominent role in my ever-evolving fitness routine.

Halloween: the Wonder, Possibility, the Growth

Halloween: the Wonder, Possibility, the Growth

When we overly identify with select traits, we create a narrative about the person we are, in turn, establishing a narrative for that which we are not. So many intriguing and valuable portions of our person are lost sight of in the process, and sometimes forgotten all together. Unfortunately, peaceful contentment cannot be found when we fail to nurture ALL of what makes us who we are, and so there’s Halloween: a chance to balance the scale a bit and allow those buried parts of our soul to make face!

Kaleidoscope of Realities

Kaleidoscope of Realities

Reality is an infinitely large umbrella that encompasses every version of it, within it. Imagine a kaleidoscope: the toy itself is capable of forming a number of striking images as the wheel turns, and although only one picture can be seen at a time, the kaleidoscope remains the keeper of all images, always.

CHALLENGE

CHALLENGE

This week, I’ve watched our community SHOW UP! Classes doubling, even tripling in size at the invitation of a challenge. With the room packed, fashioning rows of mats four or five across, the energy is electric! People are excited to show up and, even more so, to watch as friends, old and new, show up too. It’s a beautiful representation of the communing that occurs in the face of a challenge.

Mashed Potatoes in the Woods

Mashed Potatoes in the Woods

It wasn’t exciting, it definitely wasn’t glamorous, but it was exactly what I needed. I checked out, reverted in, and rested (as well as treated) my body in ways I don’t typically at home. What’s funny to me is although I began writing this from the perspective of, “well, I don’t have any big ‘yoga teacher’ inspiration or lesson to provide them from this trip, I guess I’ll just liken myself to a lump of mushy potatoes and hope for the best,” there, of course, is something to be taken away from what started as mere self-deprecating humor…

Yoga: Your Unique Work of Art

Yoga: Your Unique Work of Art

Nature thrives on variation: look at the trees, not a single one identical to the next, yet all so beautiful and full of life in their own way. Hitting closer to home, consider our own fingerprints—an inspiring design unique to us, separating us from the whole. When something new is created, nature grips on with love and evolution in a fresh and exciting direction takes hold. The same can be said about yogis sharing a space together, each posture and flow serving as a guide, but the expression of them manifesting into an individualized work of art!
