Practicing yoga is about so much more than just showing up for chaturangas and handstands in class, it’s about showing up for others, taking the practices of yoga off the mat into the world. One of our community members, Pinchy (Edith), is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to showing up for others. She spends her time teaching yoga, being a dog momma to multiple pups, karma crewing at Bare Feet and volunteering with the organization Back on My Feet. I took sometime to learn a little more about organization this and how Pinchy packs it all in!
Back on My Feet is a national organization that combats homelessness through running, community support and employment and housing services through local chapters. Pinchy has a passion for pretty much all of these things and found herself really connecting with the organization out of her love for running. She’s run her fair share of races including the Chicago marathon and numerous 10Ks and 5Ks, so she knows how to train, motivate, and take care of yourself. She started out fundraising for the organization when she ran her last Chicago Marathon and then got involved as a volunteer with one of the Chicago chapters.
Pinchy is involved with the Pilsen chapter and helps lead the Wednesday weekly runs around the neighborhood. Back on My Feet recruits members (individuals experiencing homelessness) at homeless and residential facilities around the country and begins with a commitment to run three days a week in the early morning. After 30 days in the program, members with 90% attendance earn the opportunity to move into the second phase of the program called Next Steps, which provides educational support, job training programs, employment partnership referrals and housing resources. Almost 80% of individuals who start the program move into Next Steps.
This organization is making moves! Igniting change and empowering people in need to step forward in their lives, one run at a time.
